Hemp has been a part of United States history since before it was even a country. When Christopher Columbus sailed to America in 1492, he brought hemp seeds on the ship in case of shipwreck. Each ship carried over 80 tons of sails and rigging made from hemp, and because it grows so quickly, it could easily be planted and harvested to create new supplies and be used as a food source.
Even in the early 20th century the US government grew hemp where the Pentagon now stands.
