“Marijuana’s continued presence on the statute’s list of illegal substances isn’t based on whim. It’s based on what science tells us about this dangerous and addictive drug. There’s a process that exists to move drugs on and off that list, but the scientific standard to do that hasn’t yet been met for marijuana.” – Iowa Senator Charles Grassley

In an excellent article on Reason, Jacob Sullum rips apart this uninformed prohibitionist nonsense spouted by Iowa Senator Grassley at the recent Senate Judiciary Hearing. Sullum points out the fact that the politicians that originally banned cannabis knew absolutely nothing about it, and that marijuana meets none of the criteria to be classified as a Schedule I drug.

Grassley’s claim that marijuana prohibition is based on science is upsetting, but the fact that he is in a position of authority and his opinion will be used by other uneducated folks is just sad. I’m glad Reason tore apart his assertion, and I highly recommend reading and sharing the article with everyone you know.
